Ashtanga Retreat in
Tuscania, Italy

Practice with Lino Miele at his home shala. Stay at Casa La Martana. 6 nights of yoga, food, and Italian countryside magic.

August 1 to 7, 2026 Casa La Martana, Lazio Lino Miele & Raili Maripuu

Our Story · Est. 2023

A Rare Opportunity, Now in Its 4th Year

Each year, Lino Miele - one of the world's most respected senior Ashtanga yoga teachers - opens the doors of Casale, his home shala near the small town of Tuscania in Viterbo, Lazio, Italy, for four weeks from late July. Students and Ashtanga enthusiasts from around the world travel here to practice with him.

Each year, Raili Maripuu - Lino's student and the teacher behind Ashtanga Estonia and Yoga Reading UK - travels to Casale to practice with him. For the 4th consecutive year (since 2023), she has decided to offer an organised, small-group yoga retreat for her students in Estonia and the UK, providing an amazing opportunity to practice with Lino while making the logistics seamless.

Why a guided retreat? Lino's shala is located in a beautifully remote area with limited accommodation and transport options nearby. Travelling independently can be challenging - our retreat takes care of everything so you can focus entirely on your practice and relaxation.

"We've refined this retreat over three years - from choosing the perfect accommodation to optimising the daily rhythm. Every detail is designed so you can simply arrive, practice, and enjoy the Italian countryside without worrying about logistics."

- Raili Maripuu, Retreat Organiser

🏡 Where You Stay

Casa La Martana

A beautifully restored Italian farmhouse — your home for the week. Sleep, eat, relax, and enjoy afternoon activities here.

Our home during the retreat is Casa La Martana, a small, stylish B&B set on a gated 2-hectare property near the town of Tuscania, in the Maremma Laziale region. Lago di Bolsena is about 15 minutes' drive and the Tyrrhenian Sea (Lido di Tarquinia) about 30 minutes away.

The original farmhouse was renovated by a renowned Italian architect using old natural materials and modern comforts. It has 4 guest rooms, each with a private bathroom, independent outside access, and a small private garden or terrace.

Lino Miele

Ashtanga Yoga · Morning Mysore Practices

Lino Miele began regular Ashtanga yoga practice in 1988 and is one of the first Guruji's students from Europe. Deeply interested in the Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga system, Lino started his own research under Guruji's guidance.

In 1994, upon Guruji's request, Lino published 'Ashtanga Yoga Book' - the findings of his research into the primary and intermediate series. Guruji also authorised Lino to teach that same year.

Lino has founded Ashtanga schools in Helsinki, Rome, Milan, Copenhagen, Buenos Aires, Montana, and Tallinn (2010–2015). He has published two books and two educational videos on the full vinyasa system.

Today, Lino continues to actively teach, mostly in Italy, India, and Argentina, attracting hundreds of students from around the world each year.

Raili Maripuu - Ashtanga yoga teacher

Raili Maripuu

Travel Tips

Italy in August - What to Expect

Rural Lazio in summer is magical but different from what you might expect. Here's what to know.

☀️
It's Hot - 30–35°C
Pack light, breathable clothing, a good sunhat, and plenty of sunscreen. Our schedule starts early to avoid the midday heat. The pool and hot tub are your best friends.
🕐
The Riposo (Afternoon Closure)
Most Italian shops and restaurants close between 13:00–16:00. This is completely normal and part of Italian culture! Our schedule works perfectly with this rhythm - it's your rest time too.
🫒
Truffle Season
August is fresh truffle season in this region. Expect incredible food - even simple pasta becomes extraordinary. Fresh olive oil may also be available from local producers.
🍉
Watermelon Season
Perfectly ripe, sweet watermelon is everywhere in Italy during August. The perfect post-practice refreshment after a morning Mysore session.
🌅
Golden Light & Sunflower Fields
The Lazio countryside in August has a magical golden quality - rolling hills, sunflower fields, olive groves, and unforgettable sunsets. Bring your camera.
🌌
Stargazing
We're in the remote countryside with virtually zero light pollution. The night sky here is genuinely breathtaking. Grab a blanket and lie on the lawn after meditation.
♨️
Natural Thermal Springs
Free natural hot springs are nearby. The water contains sulfur which is wonderful for the body but will permanently stain swimwear - bring an old pair you don't mind discolouring.
🏡
Peaceful & Authentic
This is rural Lazio, not Rome. Expect peaceful villages, genuine Italian hospitality, and a slower pace of life. It's beautifully uncrowded compared to the tourist cities.

Absolutely! Many of our participants come solo. The intimate group size (max 8) means you'll quickly feel part of a community. Previous retreats have brought together people from Estonia, the UK, and other countries - all connected by their love of yoga.

Light, breathable clothing for 30–35°C heat. Your yoga mat and practice clothes. Sunscreen, a sun hat, and sunglasses. An old swimsuit for thermal springs (sulfur stains!). A light jacket for cooler evenings. Comfortable walking shoes for town visits. A reusable water bottle.

Meals at Casa La Martana are vegetarian. When we dine out at local restaurants, there are options for all dietary preferences including non-vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free. Please let us know about any allergies or special requirements when booking.

Lino's €350 practice fee is paid directly to him, either via bank transfer before the retreat or in cash upon arrival. You can pay once for the full week or per session - it's flexible. Raili will provide Lino's payment details closer to the retreat.

Yes, we strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, medical expenses, and baggage. EU citizens should also carry a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

The Independent Package is designed for those who prefer to arrange their own local transport (e.g., rental car). If you don't have transport, the Standard or Premium package is recommended - all local driving, including the daily trip to Lino's shala, is included.
